Internet works basically the same for desktops and laptops. If wireless is not available, then you will need to use a modem of some sort.
You may also be able to hook up with CDMA using a cell phone modem for higher speed or you might be able to sign up for DSL.
Just research your options.

The University will provide what is called a wired Ethernet connection. You'll probably be required to purchase your own patch cable. Most Universities have technical staff that can assist you in getting connected to the campus network which will also give you Internet access. Speak with the Information Technology department or Student Services. You should probably contact the University for system requirements regarding purchasing an appropriate laptop.

It sounds like the college has what we call a hardwired network, it uses a cable from the laptop to a socket on the wall to connect.
This is then in turn connected to a central point which allows you access to the internet.
This is a safer method to use. All you need to buy in addition is a network cable, called a Cat5 or Cat6 cable, they come in various lengths. This plugs into the side or rear of the laptop, the other identical end into the wall socket.
You will have to ask the IT dept at the college how to get access, as they will have to set you up on the network.

If they provide a port in your dorm room, that most likely connects you to the school's network as well as the Internet. They'll provide you with instructions on how to set it up when you check into your dorm.

You have either wired or wireless ethernet. Wired is more secure if you aren't savvy enough to lock your computer down and keep out hackers. Make sure you do not have File & Print Sharing Service installed.
They provide the network connection to the internet. All you need to do is get your own mail account from one of the mail services.

Your college is more than likely going to have a high speed connection that is going to be connected from a jack in the wall into your ethernet port.(It looks like a large phone jack.) If your school is anything like mine, they will provide the cord, and a few instructions.
Generally, it should be a "just plug it in and go" type thing, but your school should have a Campus Technology Center to help you if you need assistance.

College dormatories usually provide connection modems in each room. There are or should be ethernet wire connections in the wall or floor at the dorm. When you purchase your laptop, make sure it comes with ethernet cable connections and be sure to purchase ethethet cables.

Internet connections for laptops work the same way they do for other computers. As far as the question of whether your college provides wired Internet access...well, you'd have to ask their IT staff.

well first you ask your school what Internet connections they have, and if you get a laptop and the (Internet card that's about $30-75 it goes on the side) is that all you need. Usually that's all you have to buy, then you may have to get a computer code from your school so the laptop recognizes it. BUT ASK BUT YOUR SCHOOL AND THE STORE YOURE GOING TO BUT FROM.
