Hamsters are territorial, especially females. Probably they matured and "claimed their stakes" in preparation for breeding, which led to the ending fight.

Hamsters are like that. It's normal. People can give you details but everyones going to tell you they need to be seperated. The males might eat the females and the females tend to eat their young. Suggestions to avoid this include giving them some of your meat or dog/cat food so they get some things in their diet but it's not like any of this is helpful after things are dead/eatten.

Hamsters also attract other rodents/pest so you may be about to start hearing phantom/ghost Hamsters,.. but find out the truth is your home is infested >.< Some times the pest are your Hamster food,.. but your not aware. Then some times the Rats get in and win,... no that's not what happened this time.

Are you planning to replace them?

I'm not sure mabey the lager one thought it was the boss and the little hamster did something. For the whole thing about the larger one dying it could have cocked and stopped breathing or (highly unlikly) the smaller one was sick some how and when the larger one ate the smaller one it got sick. But my money would be on the first one.

hamsters really like to be alone. They have their own tirretory and if anyone enters they get really upset and make them leave. If they dont it probaly ends up in death. So next time don't leave them together. I love hamsters and iu cant stand to seem them liek that

Sorry this happened. Maybe it was a territorial problem.
