There are many reasons. Christmas and New Year's are time for reflection and when this happens ones problems can really become magnified. Maybe they are lonely and look around and only see people who seem to be surrounded by loved ones. Maybe they have money problems and see people shopping and buying tons of presents. Maybe they lost a loved one at this time of the year and that hurt comes back every year. Also some people get depressed with the commercialism of the holidays. Others may look back at the magic and wonderment of the holidays as a child and cannot recapture that feeling. Being sad at a time when so many people are (or seem to be) happy can really exaggerate that feeling for them.

For many reasons; a. missed loved one who has passed on, being away from family and friends. Also, financial problems like not having enough money to buy presents. Also, there is so much rushing around and planning and then in one short day its all over, and there is " a let down". Merry Christmas!!! Dona G.

People usually get sad during the holidays because they are probably not able to be with their family, lonely or they lost a loved one.

Because Christmas is supposed to be happy and everything, and everyone's in such a good mood, except them because of some reason. They get depressed because everyone's happy except them.
