A story is the work as a whole. A plot is just one part of the story.
Most si-fi and terror writers are plot driven while most dramatist are character driven.

The story is the "end", the plot is the "means to that end"

You can portray several plots to tell the same story, just like you can take several routes to go home.

Stephen King is probably a good example of a plot driven author. Tolkein's Lord of the RIngs trilogy could probably also be considered plot driven, though there was strong characterization. Tom Clancy's novels featuring Jack Ryan, or the Harry Potter series are defintely character-driven plots.

The plot is what the story is about. You cant have a great story without a great plot
