16 inches from the center of one board to the center of the other. If a 2x6 were really 2' by 6" then they would be exactly 14 inches apart. That way you know that when they are covered up with flooring that you will be able to figure out where to nail.

The reason they say 16 inch centers is because it is an industry standard. Most walls and floor studs use the 16" standard so that others will be able to work or make changes or do repairs with the knowledge that the studs are located according to a rule or formula. It just makes it easier, plus it a sound practice for support and load-bearing reasons.

If you measure from the center of one board to the center of the next board they should be 16" apart. I find though that it is easier to hook the tape measure on one edge then measure to the same edge of the next board, you get the same distance but it is simpler. The tradition of measuring to the center came from the days of hand cut lumber, each piece was a slightly different size so you would measure to the center to maintain even spacing of the strongest part of the board. The tradition of 16" came from the days of plastering with wooden lath. Lath was made in 4' lengths, it could not support plaster over the full length (4') nor could it support the plaster over half the distance (2'), but it can support the plaster over on third the distance (16"). Since that time, plastering tech has changed, but building engineers have kept the 16" spacing so that all the old tables will work. There are two competing layouts that are now on the scene, 19.2" OC and 24" OC, both are used to reduce the amount of wood needed to build a structure, and all three are clearly marked on commonly available tape measures.

Yeah, pretty much the same place that most guys would take an extra three inches. But then again, I am pretty short. I might get more action if I added three inches to my overall height. Unless I take the three inches downstairs, but then walk around without pants or underwear. Of course if I do that, I'll probably end up in prison, and I really don't want that kind of action. So, I'll just be three inches taller, please.

Have fun
