Answer: 11.

Elements will never lose a proton since they are in the nucleus. (if it were to ever lose a proton for some crazy unknown reason it become another element entirely)

Anyhow, sodium chloride is a very polar molecule, which means Na becomes Na+ (an overall positive charge due to a greater number of protons than electrons) and Chlorine becomes Cl-. (an overall negative charge because more electrons than protons) because chlorine steals an electron.

Electrons spin in valence shells around the nucleus of an atom which is why (without getting into too far into valence shells) they can lose or gain electrons.

Losing an electron has nothing to do with the protons in the nucleus. The electrons orbit the nucleus of protons and neutrons. Na doesn't actually lose an electron; the Na and the Cl share the electron, which is how table salt (NaCl - sodium chloride) is formed.
