Can we all say HYPOCRISY?

We are all hypocrites to some degree. But what you say about the liberals is true. They preach tolerance but are intolerant of conservatives.

At least we conservatives are honest in saying we don't like certain things and admit we believe they are wrong.

Best Wishes,

Sue

Well I think you have to recognise that your definition of liberal is a general definition as opposed to a political definition, especially the definition of liberal which is currently in the public perception. The 'smearing' definition promoted as a 'put down' by the political right is of course just an example of politics at its worst - it has no real meaning, does not bear examination in any rigorous way, but is an effective political tactic. The similarity to name calling on an elementary school yard should not be ignored. Which probably is a good indicator of the educational level of the people whose perceptions are changed by such tactics. But the people who create these distortions are different, very smart, immoral and cynical. People to whom truth and reality are irrelevent - to them the only meaningful reality is whatever 'truth' they can usefully manipulate an electoral majority to believe in order to pursue their agenda.

Should a liberal be 'tolerant' of an immorality such as nazism, or totalitarian communism or even the excesses of bushism? Should a liberal be tolerant of 'torture', Should a liberal be tolerant of inadequate governement foresight? etc etc. No absolutely not. Tolerance and broad evaluation of differing ideas, the ability re-think positions in light of new information, the ability to see the gray's are all characteristics, that would probably be more closely associated with liberals than other political flavors. Yet there are some ideas and actions which are so profoundly wrong, so dangerous, so counter productive, or so antithetical to what we are as people and as a nation, there is simply no place for political tolerance and compromise. I think that liberals today would argue that the current state of this nation regarding a broad swath of issues has reached the point where compromise and tolerance is simply not acceptable

The popular political term Liberal is not the same as your dictionary definition. Using an online dictionary might do you some good:

Liberal
1.
a.Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.

b.Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of liberalism.

c.Liberal Of, designating, or characteristic of a political party founded on or associated with principles of social and political liberalism, especially in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.

I dont think tolerant or open minded means they still have to agree with everyones idea. As far as personally attacking that is something someone does on an individual basis and has little to do with their political affiliation. Also I think that a person can take disagreements with their beliefs to a personal level and they shouldnt.

I'm a liberal libertarian...I love the conservative opinions. I couldn't stand it if everyone agreed with me. Debating issues are only fun if you're dealing with a worthy adversary instead of a bunch of yes men. So I am tolerant of the conservative point of view...I know one thing for certain I'm not right on everything even though at times I sure feel like I do.

I don't think that any political point of view has a monopoly on personal attacks.

I personally consider myself liberal, and try to do everything in my power not to personally attack someone.

It's my opinion that most political pundants should stick to arguing the issues, not the people involved.

Look, attack politics is the norm in the USA. If you don't react, if you don't attack, you will find yourself "swiftboated" sure as can be. The GOP is far worse than the Democratic Party. That's why they win more often. This election was an anomoly because Bush's stink contaminated all the the GOP, thus you guys lost the House AND the Senate.

maybe because those who you think are liberals... really aren't liberals...

I've heard some people call Jim Baker a liberal recently... and I hate to break it to everyone... but he's not...

and tolerant doesn't mean you tolerate everything, it often is referring to someone being tolerant relative to others... I don't think anyone should tolerate everything, that's just silly
