I was very disappointed with the book. After hearing all of the hype, actually reading it was a huge letdown for me. It was difficult for me to believe that ALL of those things happened to him. It was constantly at the back of my mind that he could have been exaggerating for the benefit of the story, and that definitely ruined the book for me.

I was really mad at the Mother throughout, and kept rooting for Dave to somehow escape from his situation... but since I knew from the intro that he wouldn't be saved by his teachers till 1973, I knew he would be tortured again and again and again by the crazy Jezebel. I know Dave doesn't want his readers to look at "A Child Called It" as a child abuse book, cos that's what his readers mainly focus on -- his child abuse episodes by Mother. He mentioned in an interview that the actual events of the torture at home by Luciferess was worse than that portrayed in the book, and he didn't include it in cos the shock value would have been too enormous. His father was just as bad for walking out on Dave like that and not laying a hand to stop the Mother from her madness.
On a personal note, I have only genuine admiration for Dave cos for such a small child to endure what he did and not only survive it, but to be the wonderful man he is today (you've to read the other 2 sequels), it is beyond incredible... and his so modest about it too! I wish I had that sort of determination and heart that he has.

This book consumed me to the sense I couldnt begin to understand how he must have felt. Both the Father and the School I flet had failed this child as much or possibly more than the Mother, only because the Mother couldn't possibly have been stable. What person is able to do these incrediably horrible things to their own child. Why anyone would/could do these things are beyond any understanding I have and personally I hope I never understand.
Hats off to such a brave boy to be able to live in the face of HELL and to the Man that grew up to tell about it.

It has been a long time since i read it but it was a very good read. There are 2 or three more after it as well that follow his life through adulthood.
