Oh, be careful there. The courts do not look kindly upon traps. The idea being that if a fireman had to break in because of a fire, he would get caught in the trap.
If the burglar got hurt, he could sue you and probably win. It would be a real crime if a scumbag like that made money off of you when he was trying to steal from you to start with.
I would go to the local home improvement store and get a motion detector activated security light. Or a motion detector activated siren.

You may want to try what I use to keep racoons out of my yard at night. It's a "Scarecrow motion activated sprinkler" that attaches to your garden hose. Right after dark, push the Scarecrow on its stake into the ground so it points toward the garage window and turn on the water. When motion is detected the intruder will get a surprise shower. If the person later complains, just smile and say you wanted to get rid of the cats or squirrels that were bothering you.

You can go to the x-10 website and purchase one of the camera deals that will send it to a video recorder and find out who it is that is coming around and then go from there. There's also motion lights that you can put out there that would possible scare them away and if it doesn't then you will have an even better shot of them. Good luck The site is www.x10.com or something similar to that.

First question, why are you in the garage at 5:10 AM? Okay, none of my business. Get some empty cola cans and string them across the walkway. That'll be a loud clunk.

It would really suck if they kicked a bunch of empty cans "accidentally" left sitting out in the dark. Then one of those air horns go off just to really scare the rest of the sh!t out of them.
