If you only see the one, it probably came in on a grocery bag. If you think you are getting them living in your apartment, the very best fix is to sprinkle a mixture of borax and corn meal in the dark places under your sink and behind appliances. This is non-toxic to you - unlike some of the sprays - and very effective. The corn meal attracts them, and when they eat it, they get the borax, too, and that kills them.

If you live close to wooded areas they can come in from there. Also, they will sometimes come in with bags where you might purchase something. Such as flea markets etc.
The best thing to use to get rid if them is Boric Acid Powder. You can get it at stores like Dollar General & maybe Wal Mart, Grocery stores.
To follow up from above: you won't necessarily see the roaches. There can just be eggs or whatever you call those things they come from.

If it's the little German roaches...ew! Got new neighbors? They like going with whomever feeds them well, along with boxes and paper bags.

If you are talking about the big ones, they're creepy, but not from poor hygiene. Waterbugs come in looking for water.

Boric acid is cheap. Buy some and run lines of it in the back of the inside of your cabinets .

If you can get your hands on some myrtle leaves and put them in various places in you house you won't see them anymore. They come from every where. Paper groceries bags . Micros waves coffee pots Any warm electric unit like TV's. You just have to either call a professional or goto a do it yourself store.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects. You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk

Tell the landlord or maintenance guy, one of your neighbors probably isn't as clean as you are. They can also come in from paperbags....the stuff they use to kill them takes up to two weeks to work so get on it tomorrow toots!
