Depends on what you want to mount, you can drill a hole with a masonry bit and use an anchor, or if you want to avoid making a hole, there are brick clips available at the hardware store, they hold around 25 lbs...here is a website with some info on them (manufacturer website) : http://www.brickclip.com/
If it is something like a poster or other lightweight material, you can use EZUp clips or poster tack.

You got some good answers about using a masonry bit and a hammer drill. If you don't have a hammer drill a regular electric drill will work, just slower and requires a lot more pushing.
Do you drilling in the mortar between the bricks and then later if you change your mind, you can plug them up and return the brick wall to the original look.
The anchors are much the same as drywall anchors, but depending upon the weight they might be metal. Your local hardware or home improvement store should have both the anchors and the masonry bits.

I would not make any holes in my brick wall. You should use
metal clamps that are sold in hardware store...Home depot.
Rona.....These clamps can easily hold up to 50 lbs and easily
removed when you decide you don't need them anymore.

There are special hangers for brick available at any hardware store, just grab one of the old guys........notice I say OLD, they usually know where those less commonly used items are. You can try Home Depot or Lows but I would suggest an Ace hardware...its usually where the old timers work.

You need to use masonry anchors.Depending how heavy it is, and if ,it's going to be pulled on(like a pool stepladder)determends the kind and size of the anchor. You will also need a masonary drill bit.Again you will need to know the size of the anchor first. It's a pretty easy job.

You need a hammer drill and a concrete bit. The anchors you need depend on the weight of what you are hanging on the wall, on the anchor box it will say what size bit you need for that particular product.
