Depends.....on age.......on physical ability. Seated fitness classes, including group activities with one of those huge round parachutes. If the facilities are available, a gardening room is wonderful. Invite local schools to show off their musical or dramatic talents for the home's residents! If there's a vehicle available, you could book a party room at a movie theatre, view a show and have snacks in the room afterward. "Resident of the month" posters are nice......a bio and photos of the person done up nicely on a poster, displayed in the common areas for the month, and then its theirs to keep. Card games, board games, possibly to be played with community volunteers if available? Some nursing homes have piano's for sing-a-long afternoons, some even Karaoke nights! If there's a big sports game on, make a party of it! Is there a program in your area where people bring dogs or cats to homes to visit with the residents? Canada has the PALS program and when they bring in the animals, the residents LOVE it!! Good luck!!!

Karaoke is something everyone loves, after the first initial shyness.

Music is fun for all ages.

Games that have a little prize are wonderful. Play pretend Deal or No Deal or some other version of a famous TV game but give little prizes like a candy bar (sugar free or regular)

Everyone likes to paint or do some easy crafts.

Decoupage is fun for all.

Wheelchair bowling (my mom's favorite), a colorful parachute stretched by the residents in a circle, poking a balloon into the air, playing catch with a beach ball, wheelchair exercising, cocktail hour once a week, candlelight dinners, casino night, simple crafts, sing-alongs, visits from a local pre-school, and last, but not least, BINGO! That should keep them busy!

From my years of working in Nursing homes and private care homes....

At one place I worked there was this guy who used to come and sing with a guitar and they all loved to sing along. I also spent a lot of time with one lady one on one, and she LOVED to tell me old stories (granted the same ones over, and over.... and over.........and over. But anyway) and also to help me cook. It was an independent home, only 4 people lived there, so I was able to do that....

So ideas: If you have a local guy with a guitar who knows some of the songs of their era, and doesn't mind coming in, that works. Also, if you can get them in smaller groups to reminisce or work on baking projects... even for the ones who can't do as much, just being able to stir the batter and 'help out' means a lot, and it gives you something to do while you visit.

I also used to sit and talk to them while I knit or cross stitched. The ladies I worked with couldn't do those things anymore, but they were always interested to see what I was working on and talk about projects they had done, giving me advice, etc.

Also, they loved to go for carrides. Again, these were mostly smaller private homes, and we could load all 4 of them into a larger car or whatever and go for a spin. But they LOVED it. In the summer, go for a ride, get an ice cream. whatever.
