Flower Food?

Question

I have a rose at the moment, and I really don't want it to die. At the same time, I don't want to have to go to the store to buy flower food (unless it's my only option.)

Is there anything I could use around the house or something to keep it alive?

Any ingredient to make flower food for the rose?

I heard cold water might do, but it's not exactly helping. It's still living, but slowly dying.

I am assuming that it is a cut rose. Take the rose out of the water and give it a new cut diagonally and clean the vase and put it in tepid water. This may keep it for a couple more days. But if you want to keep it for a very long time, take it out of the water now and hang it upside down and it will dry nicely. Won't stay the same exact color, but you could tie a ribbon on it and hang it on the wall. Makes a nice memoir.

First, I'm assuming this is a cut flower in a vase, not a plant. If so, mix about 1 teaspoon sugar in a cup (8 oz) of water and add a couple of drops of bleach. (Clorox works fine.) Use about a quarter of this daily. The sugar feeds the flower and the bleach keeps bacteria and fungal growth down.

Keep the flower in a fairly cool place and out of direct sunlight. Also, remove any lower leaves that are in the water. Anytime the water looks cloudy, change it. When you do, be sure to cut off the bottom half inch of the stem at an angle. The cells of the cut off stem lose the ability to absorb water in a couple of days and the diagonal cut provides more fresh surface to absorb water again. Some people mist the flower and leaves lightly with water every day, but I have not noticed that it helps.

A fresh cut rose should last 7 -14 days depending on room temperature It lasts longest in cool rooms. But whatever you do, don't put it in a refrigerator. Most are self defrosting so the air inside them is very dry and will dry out the rose quickly.

Roses do not do well indoors, if it is outdoors , depending on where you live, if it is in a cold weather zone, it will die back and regrow next year. If it is in the house, you would need to cut it back to almost the root, set it in a warm dry place, water it occcasionally, and it should start new growth. Best thing to feed roses is epsom salts diluted in water, or a packet of
unflavored gelatin, mixed in water. A banana skin placed under the soil feeds it with Potassium, which is good for roses.
