He has ticked off the conservatives for years. He supports amnesty for illegals. He has been a thorn in the side of President Bush. Conservatives vote in primaries and we hate McCain.
Also note that 2 of the 7 Republican Gang of 14 who impeded judicial nominations, lost reelection.
What makes him think he has a prayer at the Republican nomination for President?

I guess that I did not clarify. Conservatives vote in primaries and they do not support liberals at all. This is why Rudy has no shot.

Politicians have huge egos. After all, any one who even THINKS about running for pres has to believe "The only thing wrong with this country is that I'm not running it."

McCain WOULD have made a good President - but that was then, and this is now. He's become an apologist for the Bush administration, kissing up to Bush and his cronies like there's no tomorrow. And, he wants to send more troops to Iraq. That stance won't fly - no way in hell. Whatever happened to the old John McCain - the one that even I - a Democrat - crossed over and voted for in the 2000 primary? Is the McCain that's out there now a clone taken over by an alien? He certainly doesn't sound like the old John McCain. No way would people vote for him the way he is right now. Talk about flip-flopping!!!!

Well I supported him in the caucus over Bush, even if his policies are confused at times, so are Bush's, I like McCain less now, but is there any other front runner who has the statesmanship, a war record that can't be reproached (lousy pilot but he could have been released but refused to leave his buddies), and no scandals (unless the dems are sitting on them in case he does get the nomination?). A candidate has to be something other than "opposed to the other guy", this may work for dems but reps expect better, I guess that's why sex/financial scandals sink reps but not dems? Soldiers who have been through combat are less likely to send troops into harm's way. People who went overseas or to college or (yes) even stateside duty, and whose foreign policy and military staff positions are filled with those who never wore a uniform, don't seem to understand once you fight and take a place, holding it is harder without peace. Apparently no one estimated the hatred of neighboring countries for the idea of deposing a tyrant and installing a democracy where all are equal, in the middle of the Middle East, and they will stop at nothing to prevent Bush's plans. Who wants to be the next President that steps into this Cold War revival?

In 2000, McCain projected a lifeless ringer for a maverick, a la Ross Perot; in recent times he seems extra like Admiral Stockdale accessible. McCain's candidacy is DOA. Bob Dole might have a extra suitable probability.

Because he was a POW and spent YEARS in a prison after being shot down in Vietnam. It gives you perspective to come out of that and be useful, but this guy has served his state for years.
I am glad that he says what he thinks instead of pandering to the undecided block of voters, that's what Bush did. He came off as a moderate at first then after he got to power, he did whatever he and his rich corporate sponsors wanted.
I would vote for McCain in a second if I thought I was voting for him and not his rich juice buddies.

His arrogance, thats the only reason he thinks he has a shot.
This man is a wolf in sheeps clothing, a liberal wearing a Republican tie. He may not be blue blooded liberal, but he sure is liberal enough for me. He can run, but he wont win

A false sense that we republicans vote for the party and not the person. That is a liberal frame of mind and he is showing his true colors.
