Hmmm, my sister "realized" that one day and started calling us all, urging us to get help. We just avoid her now.

You need to realize that maybe your friends and family are not mentally ill. They may just be a little quirky or very normal. It may be that what seems to be odd to you is not odd to other people. Have you taken a look at the things you do? Maybe when you consider the source they may be just as normal as you. Try to find out why they do the things they do. Their answer may surprise you.

Unless a LOT people have told you that you're just like Aunt Sally (the one who was locked up for ax-murdering poor old Uncle Albert) or that you remind them of your grandmother who used to dance naked in the town square fountain at noon. . .don't worry about it.

There *are* genetic components to some mental illnesses, but that doesn't mean you're doomed to poison the eggnogg at this year's Christmas bash. If people don't seem worried about your behaviors and you have no history of arrests or scrapes with the law (or mental health system), then you're doing just fine.

If you are seriously worried, though, consult a therapist or psychatrist. They can help reassure you that you're just fine. Even if your best friend *is* a little green guy from Mars.

Kidding. . .just kidding!!

It depends on what your concern is and the nature of the mental illnesses. If you're concerned that you have an inordinate number of mentally ill friends and it's negatively impacting your life, you may want to explore with a mental health professional why you're especially attracted to mentally ill people. If you're concerned that you're destined to exhibit symptoms of mental illness yourself because you've inherited mental illness from family members, you may want to explore your concerns with a medical professional. And if you're concerned that you may pass along a genetic predisposition to mental illness to your unborn children, you may want to explore this possibility through genetic counseling. Or you may want to do nothing. It depends on whether or not your realization is accompanied by factors that diminish the quality of your life, or if it is merely a realization.

You'd do what any anyone would do. We choose our friends, usually because they have similar characteristics & qualities as ourselves. Our families, from whom we inherit our traits and physiological and cranial attributes we have no control over. So ... that should help you to find an answer.

Unless you are a Psychiatrist, be careful in diagnosing your friends and family, you could see your own reflection and behavior in them. Make sure it is not you, who needs help.

Be glad it is not you and do something about it now to prevent it from going to far. Take care of yourself, eat right, and exercise. don't fill your mind with things that don't count, read stuff that is good for you and do things that are healthy for your mind also. etc.
