Antifreeze has chemicals in it that don't get fully activated until you add water. Most antifreeze is sold as a concentrated solution. It's not really necessary to have an exact 50% blend of water and antifreeze.

Antifreeze actually has more protection when mixed with water. It doesn't protect as well when used straight. A 50/50 mix will give you protection down to -33 degrees.
If you're in doubt, stop by a garage and they can test it for you real quickly.

In many cases it is fine to have a little more water as long as the mix still protects as low as you need it to for your climate. 50/50 is considered safe for up to -25 to -35 Deg F or so. It is important to mix, as just straight anti-freeze does not have as good cooling capabilities as a mix with water. You should test or have the coolant tested just to make sure it has enough as to not freeze if you are in an area where it might happen.

If more water is in mixture, potential to freeze is greater. As stated above, follow mixing directions as stated on the antifreeze's containers.

Adding a little water is OK in emergency's but if you keep adding water only, the coolant boiling point will lower and the freezing point will raise. There are test methods to make sure you have the right mix. Most shops do this for free.

The whole object of car maintenance is to put your best foot forward. For that reason distilled water DOES belong with your 100% antifreeze mixture. Tap water is loaded the items you listed above plus iron which causes a mess in the entire cooling system. The first person who answered your question probably dumps tap water in his car battery.

antifreez will not work alone It does not have the cooling propertees of water but antifreez will lower the freezing point of water so that it wont freez and it also raises the boiling point slightly so a good mix will save your cooling system ...
