I have seen in most places that is not, but then what is the difference from downloading the show you missed versus TiVo or recording it through another media????

No, it is not legal. Unless the copyright owner (production studio, actor, etc) says it is free to distribute, it isn't legal.

The difference between recording through TiVo and Torrents is that through TiVo, the networks are knowignly releasing their programming through tv, and they know people are going to record them with a VCR, DVD recorder, TiVo etc. But these recordings are only allowed for personal use. These recordings are not allowed for mass distribution. It doesn't matter if you are distributing the copies for free or for money. By mass distributing it, you are limiting the copyright owner from trying to sell commercial copies in the future, because a lot of people interested in the show already obtained illegal copies.

Also, when you record off of tv, the shows ratings increase, and they receive profits through higher commercial prices. When people are able to download via Torrents, they can bypass the the ratings system, and the shows suffer that way as well.

No. lol. you don't need an article. the FBI provides a federal warning for all copyrighted material usually at the beginning of the movie. ...but I'm not saying that it's likely that there will be consequences for him...but he could be the exception out of the hundreds of thousands that download movies/games/music etc
