I work for a family with 4 children, ages 2,4,6 and 8. I average 10 1/2 hours a day, 4 days a week or 2 days a week every other week. I was originally responsible for doing 1 load of laundry during the day and the picking up and dropping off of children to different activities. My day starts at about 7:30am and ends at 6pm. I bring home $600 every two weeks. My family doesn't compensate for overtime (time over 6pm, which I frequently do) They now want me to clean up whatever is dirty in the house, make the beds, keep the kitchen and dining room clean along with the bedroom, bathroom, and the children's bedroom for the same pay. I am told that, if it's messy, since I am there all day with only two children, I need to clean house. NONE OF THE CHILDREN ARE TAUGHT OR EXPECTED TO PICK UP AFTER THEMSELVES. Also, there is almost never any food in the house. The previous night's dinner is left out until mid-day, along with dishes and other things from the previous night. What do I do?

you are working 42 hr/ week or 21hr every other week and get paid the same amount i assume under the table no taxes have to be paid. If this is the case you make about $7.15/hr which if you are being paid under the table its more along the lines of $9.00/hr. I would tell them i am responsible for the household while i am here. I am not responsible for last nights situations. If you think about it your actually making out pretty good. Just make them aware of your requests however if you do the math its not bad because No household has you standing on your feet working the entire time and when your on a break at a regular job you usually dont get paid. So all in all it equals out. Now if you were to say they were verbally abusive or something like that...thats a diff. story. Just think about it.

Are they the only family you can work for? But before I go there, have you tried sitting down with them and talk about your expected responsibilities? I used to be a nanny and it was a great experience but then I expressed my thoughts to my boss and the kids at times were bad but I think it worked out with me because we would talk about things I felt out of place. And if they are not paying you for over time and it wasn't included in your contract that you would be working overtime you can report them to the Department of Labor even if they are not a big business. Well inform me on how it went once you talk to them that is if you do do that. Otherwise start looking for another family. Are you an exchange student or something?

I think you are being taken advantage of especially for only 300.00 a week. I think you should consider finding another job with a family that will treat you better.

Sounds to me like you need to either speak up about this or start looking for another host family to work with.
