Soul Man is a great tune done by Sam and Dave, two rhythm and blues artists from the 1960's and 70's. It was the time of the civil rights movement in the United States. Black people were demonstrating to be recognized as full citizens and not be discriminated against. One aspect of the civil rights movement was "Soul Power", or the exercise of civil rights by blacks. Black people were said to have "Soul". There were Soul Brothers, Soul Sisters, Soul Food Restaurants, Soul Music, and the list goes on. In Soul Man, they're singing about being proud to be black men.
If you want to hear some more good Soul Music, listen to James Brown. Try "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud", and "Soul Power". Almost all of James Brown's hit tunes are really good.
By the way, it's very understandable how a person who doesn't speak English as a first language would think that "Soul Man" is about a dead man. That's funny, and I had to laugh. I had never thought of it that way, but it makes sense.

It is hard to put in words, but being a Soul Man comes from the inside. You are in tune with yourself, your soul, your most inner..It's a certain connection to life and your being.
