Classic! Absolute classic!
This song has most certainly stood the test of time, and always will.
Our children and grandchildren will still be relishing in this song's beauty long after we're gone!
Awesome of you to stir up some wonderful memories for me.

"The three men I admire most, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost ....they caught the last train for the coast........"

Most definitely one of my favorites of all.

Joel A is right...The song is about the day Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Richie Valens died in that plane crash... ( according to an on -air interview I saw with mcLean). A very sad but relevant song at the time. I wish someone had written a song about Jim Croce like that one..Jim also parished in a plane crash, and has been kind-of forgotten by the music industry....Sad, because he was one of the best singer/songwriters alive then........But to answer your question, Yes I like it, even though it got over-played on the radio at the time it became a hit.

I LOVE THAT SONG!! And I agree, he did put a lot of thought into it, and it is a great roadtrip song. My favorite line, as a die-hard band geek, is "the players tried to take the field, the marching band refused to yield" -- it makes a pretty picture in my mind.

Yes, I like it.

I've heard it enough times to be able to visualize some of the phrases. Like "Bad news on the doorstep", you can almost see the paper hit the doorstep, unfold, and reveal a horrible headline.

Do you know the story behind it? What it's about? The plane crash that killed Buddy Holly. It is a great song. Sort of a one-hit-wonder for him though.

It is one of my all time favorites. I love this song, they played it at my god-fathers funeral and it hits me everytime I hear it. It is such a soulful song. My husband learned to play it on the guitar last year, I love to listen to it.

As long as it is the long version. When it first came out, they would only play the short version
