My gf's kids told her that no matter how badly they do in school they wont be held back but will be passed on to the next grade. She didnt believe this till a parent teacher meeting to discuss why her son hadnt been bothering to do most of his work, what little they actually assign. Im not sure if the school got the wrong idea or is this a correct take on the no kid left behind act? They confirmed the rumour. Is this true in many schools or is this some kind of horrible abberation?

a friend is a teacher and i have seen the reports of middle school students who do not have any spelling or grammatical skills whatsoever. they are all passed on to the next grade level. this will have disastrous effects on the nation, i fear, at some future time.

In most schools this is true. Noone stays behind a grade in our school . The norm is that teachers and parents have a say in the type of class their child goes into. I have done voluntary reading at our school and from what I have seen some kids should not go up a grade until they can read properly. It is these students that will want to leave school early and not be employable.Itis not a good system.

The School has it dead wrong. No Child Left Behind is a federal law that mandates that schools test and provide that students meet basic proficiency levels. It does not mean that a child who is lazy or did not meet the requirements will never fail. It means they will get help until they pass. I would report the school to the district or state.
