the advantage is that it is a more authentic means of assessment...it is very difficult to fake an essay if you have not mastered the information...also you eliminate the luck factor that exists with multiple-choice exams...of course, the downside is that they take longer to grade...however, as a teacher, i was willing to put in the extra time because i knew i was getting better results that way (and my students were learning more, too)

Paper writing exam is one way of doing it. It would be good to combine it with other kinds of assignment so you can really find out the good sides and the not so good sides of someone. If writing is not a strong aspect but creativity is very strong then you are judging the person wrong.

Papers, essay exams are good indicators of actual knowledge instead of educated guess. It allows the student to elaborate on knowledge and show the higher thinking skills of evaluation and synthesis.

No not REPLACED by a written exam, but one is necessary to see exactly how much information is retained in someones` head. This can only be done by a written test.
