Lately I've been feeling indifferent to the whole writing scene. I don't feel like putting in the effort to write papers or free write on my own time. But I would like to improve and build on my ability.
Are there any ways you motivate yourself to write?

Most writing instructors suggest er, demand a certain amount of writing every day. Train yourself to do such even if it is only one sentence. Make it a really, really good sentence. Julia Cameron's theory is that we are so filled with unresolved issues we cannot focus on specific subjects. She recommends a practice called Morning Pages whereupon you write three pages of freestyle, unedited writing immediately upon rising. She calls them Morning Pages because most people sleep at night and arise in the morning but it would apply for day sleepers who arise in the afternoon. Put your pen to paper and writer whatever comes into your head. You will be surprised what spills out. You can then begin your day unfettered by the previous days detritus and open yourself to inspiration. You may also find sources for ideas in what comes out of these exercises.

Other writers recommend reading the classics thoroughly, or just reading good works. It is like associating with writers.

Writers have often said they write because they can't not write. They have something they need to say, or need to tell, to share with others; or they may have something they need to tell themselves---

Look for the idea or the plotline or a situation that hooks you in, small or large---make a note or two, then play with it. Try doing this on a daily basis, so it becomes a habit---being able to work on longer projects will come in time.

Aim, in your writing, first of all to write something you'd like to read yourself---you may surprise yourself with what you have to say!

Try thinking of the BIG picture-- start to write your memoirs. Do this with no hopes of getting anything published. Not only should the keys fly faster than you can type, but you may find a completely new and uninhibited style accompanying your prose.

Come up with exercises. Join a group with other authors. Find a book of scenarios and lets your mind go wild.

Basically, get into a happy mood. Write about something that sets your soul on fire.

Force yourself if you have to. It's not really something you can learn, like kendo or baking - what you need is inspiration.
