I live in Austin. The Space Shuttle comes over Texas frequently during the return from space. Once I climbed up on my roof at around 2:00 am to watch it pass over. The sky was pitch black. I wondered if I would have a good view. Ha!

I saw it coming when it was at the horizon. It was a bloody great streak of orange light travelling at Mach 10 or better. After it had passed by, there was still an orange streak in the sky from one horizon to the other. It was so hot, it had ionized the air around it and it was still glowing.

There are plenty of pictures and movies of this posted on the web if you care to look.

I am in Austin too and saw it reenter right over the city once. I even took video of it with a camcorder. Then I went inside and watched it land in Florida on live TV just a few minutes later.
