I am a highschool freshman considering a transfer to a private highschool. The school I'm at now is considered one of the best in the country; academic standards for students are set very high. Sometimes, competition gets brutal enough so that a senior who might have been accepted to X at another school, gets admitted to a community college, because of a low GPA. Classes are large as well, ranging from 35-40 kids/class.
Currently, I have a GPA of 3.5, where I'd probably be getting a 4.0 at another school, but it would bother me to be in a less-than-prestigious highschool. (That's just the way I've been programmed, don't ask.)
It seems to me my only alternative is a private school where more focus will be on me. The one I'm looking at appears to be just as competitive, but the small class sizes must help. Problem is, I don't know which might be better in putting me on the path towards a good (possibly, Ivy League) college. This is a big step I'd be taking; any comments will help.

Ask the colleges you want to attend. Go with their suggestion. I think you are putting a lot of emphasis on grades where as most colleges also look at many other factors. You are worried about names of schools and arbitrary grades intead of what you are learning and being well rounded and well prepared. Yes, grades are part of that but they are not the only indicator.

I went to a public school and then on to an ivy league university. I know they do take the school you're coming from into account along with your grades and ranking, so it will mean more coming from this school. Although, to be honest, most of my classmates came from private schools. But if the private school is less prestigious than the one you're going to now.... In the end, just be happy, motivated, and well-rounded, wherever you think that is possible, and you'll be fine. :-)
