I'm not a novice but I'm not getting this one. Are they fixing to cut out portable recording?

Make sure the cable coming out of the wall goes into the cable box input then from the coax output to the VCR input, and then from the VCR output to the TV input. You will have to set the channel you want to record on the box, set the VCR to Channel 3 or 4 (whichever the box is set to on the back) then you can press record when ready. Also connect your cable box directly to your TV using either component video or better yet DVI or HDMI (I'm assuming you have an HDTV). Make sure you turn to your HD input on the TV when watching cable directly and turn to the antenna input when watching a video cassette.
