Depends in what state you live in whether there is much difference as to what is offered between school systems.

Good Luck!!!

You should be able to find a website for your state's department of education and it will have a multitude of information including special education information for that state. Then you also should set an appointment with the local district to discuss your individual child's needs and how they will be met in that school. Ask about what this school has to offer your child...special classrooms, all day with one teacher, mainstreaming (where the child attends some classes with non-handicapped children), modifications used to help teach your child, testing procedures, social interaction, electives offered, facilities, teacher qualifications, number of hours your child will receive special services, teacher-student ratios, etc... Know the law, but also know what is needed for helping your child to learn. Choose a school that is willing to work to help your child achieve to his or her best. The teachers should be professional and knowledgeable about their subject and be well trained.

a good website is www.greatschools.net
It gives you demographics, up to date test data, info about how much teaching experience the staff has, student/teacher ratio and other info. It will even compare schools to each other within as mileage radius.

Your district and state should have those statistics. Go to schools and ask.
