To the first poster and anyone similarly misinformed--I am Nigerian...and I am also a young, successful NY corporate attorney. It is very doubtful I would be scamming anybody.
Needless to say, these few guys aren't representative of a country of more than a 100 million people. I should also point out that I have received these letters myself--and they almost always require the scam target to indulge in behavior that is in the least, ethically questionable.
I don't feel sorry for scammers who take advantage of other people (though many of these people do come from circumstances where job and educational opportunities are seldom available) but I CERTAINLY do not feel sorry for rich, greedy individuals who are more than willing to share in the ill-gotten funds (i.e. murder money) of a dead dictator, especially where it is clear that helping to move the funds to an offshore account would be in violation of the country's laws or some other international law.
Scammer and scammed are both criminals alike and apparently are bred both in Nigeria and the U.S. The good thing is that most Americans probably realize this and most Americans also have the good character to not get involved in these questionable pursuits.
While the 20/20 folks should be commended for shedding light on what is becoming a huge issue for everyone associated, Ross does the American public a great disservice by sensationalist reporting. All of the intelligent and talented individuals from Lagos city making an impact in Nigeria and all around the world are surely not products of a "corrupt, disgrace of a city" as Ross claims in the 20/20 report. Given individuals in any place may be corrupt, but do not disparage an entire city. kudos, 20/20; Shame on you, Ross!
Naija for life!!!

Though I feel like this was very informative, I do have a problem with the portrayal of Nigerians as a whole by 20/20. I'm an American born child of Nigerian immigrants. If you look at statistics for immigrants, Nigerians per capita are the most educated in the US. My parents and all their friends have made a positive contribution to this society. While I do think there is a dispraportionate number of internet scammers from this country, I do not believe this is a representation of the majority of the population from Nigeria.

There were 2 women on Dr Phil last week who were scammed, but really you would have to be pretty gullible to get scammed like they did, especially the one lady who was about 60 and the guy she was in love with was a hot looking 25yr old policeman from England who was also being scammed by the Nigerian scammer.

I receive at least one of these offers a day. I have two rules. 1) I never give out important information about my private business. 2) When ever there is an offer to make a lot of money for just investing a few dollars should be a red flag.
No I have never been stung like that before and every one I know has an IQ over fifty so they would not touch it either. Let me rephrases that. My wife might.
