Would you like to get hit? The animal does not reason like we humans do. They don't know why they are being hit. There are many positive ways to correct bad or unwanted behavior other than hitting the animal. When you correct an animal by hitting them you do several things to the animal.
1. You make them fear you;
2. You teach them not to come to you;
3. They learn to run away from you;
4. You teach them aggression;
5. You teach them to bite you.
Why? Because you are hurting them and they are trying to stop you by biting you. That's their only defense. They don't understand anything other than instinct unless they have been trained.
STOP HITTING your animals. Do some research on the animal and learn what their traits are. Are they a prey animal or a predator? That makes a difference.

Well firstly I hope you don't really smack them, smack them. I mean, I can see if they keep doing something bad like snapping at random people or people in the house, maybe a little pop on the butt or on the nose, but not hitting. But it's just a normal and common reaction for them, and the dogs that don't bite back are submissive, and roll onto their backs to show that you're boss. You shouldn't smack them at all, though. Firm words and a little pop on the nose here and there for really bad things, not 'Oh no you jumped on the sofa!' kind of things. It's just impulsive for them to bite.

Dogs and cats instinctively respond to aggression with aggression. Try training your pets with positive reinforcement, that is, rewarding them when they do something you want them to do, rather than punishing them when they do something you don't want them to do. Hitting your pets accomplishes nothing, and will only teach your pets to be fearful of you in the future.

Because they came from the wild and are scared of you. Hire a dog trainer or a kid (the latter are very eager to earn some money!!!!)
P.S. Dont hit your animals, NO is enough.
