i will try not to mention the fact that the sun produces storms that can wipe out the very tings you use everyday one of them being what you are using right now and some of these sun spots that can be as big as Jupiter

I think the great majority of the people in democratic countries want space exploration so the elected representatives pass legislation that is consistent with their constituency. For many, it is the next logical step to an advanced civilization. The space station is supposed to serve basically as a port and could be used in rescues to avoid another space shuttle disaster.

Setting up of space station reduces cost and risk of life of astronauts while performing scientific research. Many researchs such as drugs for cancer and other deadly diseases are carried out. Another advantage is they can mend the damages to any satelites and perform checks for any malfunctioning.
This station also solve purpose of studies of other planets, sun, space storms, gravitational & magnetic pull, black hole, and to look deep into the space which couldn't be possible from earth(like huble telescope).
Needless to mention they do solve the purpose of spying too.

First few reasons that pop in my head are gravity and atmosphere. (Assuming you're talking about an orbital space station)

In space there is no atmosphere to interfere with the light we see from stars. Also, there are numerous experiments we can try out in zero gravity (Or less gravity would be more accurate) that will give us a much better understanding.

to provide a jumping-off point for future space missions to mars or the moon. space vehicles could be refueled to replace that which was utilized to propel them from the earth's gravity.
