my suggestions are for preschoolers - I have a 5 & 2 year olds and these are the toys they have and love - no batteries needed.
fisher-price castle (any castle with knights included will do) - our has "secret paths" and drawbridge, etc. - hours of fun for both my girl and boy.
Thomas tank engine wooden track and an engine and a few cars
(this can be pricey, but again - hours of fun) There are ones that no batteries are need...just imagination ;)
musical instruments - my kids love to be creative and come up with their own music and songs... who knows maybe you will be giving it to the next Beethoven. (we have the simple stuff - toy piano that looks like a dinosaur, tamborine, drums) You can find box full of various instruments for around $20-25 at target, toysrus, usually.
My son likes his toolbox full of hand tools, measuring tape, screws, play wood (everything is plastic, but he thinks it is soooo cool) he loves to "invent' stuff.
He also loves tinkertoys. I can't tell you how many "creations" he has made.
Those are the most loved and played with toys that my kids have. My son wants Lincoln logs this year. Any toy that lets them have fun with their imaginations and create something is great. They love to show off their creations. I know it seems that everything needs batteries, but there really are alot of things out there that don't.
Good luck. Any present they get will be well appreciated I am sure.

You can always donate teddy bears and tonka trucks. Lots of these do not use batteries. There are sports balls, make up (for little girls), and bicycles. And, there are lots of stores where the batteries come in a four pack and only cost a dollar. (Dollar Tree, .99cent, Dollar General, and Family Dollar stores)

I like the Little People toys, and there are many toys for toddlers that do not need batteries. Legos are a good gift for slightly older children. You could always consider a radio controlled toy that is rechargeable.

That truly is a wonderful gift that you are giving to someone this Christmas! Giving of yourself is a wonderful thing to do..not only during the Holidays but all year round. My suggestion is some sort of board game or game that would not only challenge the child's knowledge but give them the opportunity to make some friends. Board games can be very educational, fun and social which in a situation they are in..sometimes having a good friend is the best gift of all. :)

BOOKS!!!!!!
We all forget how great books are when we were kids. They let US live in the book. GET A GOOD BOOK!!
You could even get a series based on age ranges.
BOOKS are the pathway to knowledge, without them we would be LOST in the woods. (hey, i just though that line up... i like it.) :-)
You could even make it really kewl by making your own backpack or bookmark to put the books in or in the book as well as your contact info. to become involved in an underprivelged kids life or put a coupon in some of the books for "reading" lessons or for you to read to them OR have them read to you (make sure you are interested when they do it) How awesome would that be to touch a strangers life in such a profound way.
HOPE, LOVE and CHRISTMAS RRUULLEESS!!!!!!!!!!!
:-) vitalthreat
p.s. you can Qoute the "BOOKS are the pathway to knowledge, without them we would be LOST in the woods." on the cover of the first book you give and take it for your own... "tought" in a childs mind will stick with them forever!! and YOU can have that effect!!!!!!!!
GOD bless!! (becuase I believe in GOD) ((faith..., no mattter what belief is a good thing, as is HOPE.)))

well, i'd say to get something that u know that the kids at charity don't usually get. that way, they can get something that they don't have already. but i guess that u can't really get something too exxpensive....
