this is rooted in religious history believe it or not, in the days when irish dancing started, Ireland was very much influenced and run by the church, the church decreed that dancing was lascivious and therefore a sinful act, ,,,,,,,,but if a way to dance could be found that did not involve movement of any body part above the waist, then it would not be classed the same and was permissible, hence the stiffness of the arms and torso when dancing.

Actually, because the footwork is so intricate that the dance masters wanted to keep the focus on the feet. Also, its very tiring to do that type of dancing - it would be a beast to add arms.

Most of the dresses are made in a way that makes it difficult to even raise your arms.

im quite confident that when eire replaced into lower than brittish rule they were not allowed to bounce, they could dance lower than the table shifting only their legs so the brittish wouldnt comprehend they were dancing, now that is custom, in a lot of actual irish restarunts the residing house windows dont commence till eventually the tables and the tables are a tad larger!

because back in the day when they had been invaded, they made a law that said irish couln't dance, so the irish of course found a way around this by making it look just like they were jumping around to get warm incase a policeman came around, thus that is way te arms are strait

Because that's the first way that they first learned of which way
is the perfeshinal way to do the Irish knd of dance but, also
why I think they have to keep there arms sraight is because
there mostly paying attention to there feet when they dance.
That's all I know.

I think, with it being Irish, that it gave their dancing partners assurance that they wouldn't be getting their pockets picked.
