Ford cut-off switches are usually in the trunk. to check the fuel pump, first make the shut-off is reset, then cycle the ignition on and off and have someone listen for a buzzing noise at the back of the car. If not have it diagnosed. The pump is in the gas tank and is a pain to get at, but other things can shut it down.

I just recently spent several hours hunting down a crank, no start problem on a 97 Taurus. I would not quickly assume it is a fuel filter problem. I wish I could quickly walk you through the testing process I took to isolate the problem. It could be anything from a faulty CCRM(Constant control Relay Module - houses the EEC relay, fuel pump relay, low & high fan control & WOT A/C control relay) to a crank sensor.

Before you start throwing parts at it, although a fuel filter isn't a bad idea at 130K, the fuel rail has a test port so testing for fuel pressure is easy with the right tools. The coil receives power on one pin through the ignition switch and the other 3 wires are grounded by the ECM when it sees a crank signal. Try and purchase or borrow a fuel pressure tester and a spark tester. The quick and dirty test for a crank signal is to look at the check engine light during cranking. It should go out. If it doesn't, chances are, the ECM is not seeing a crank signal. Those are pins 21 & 22 on the ECM which is on the back firewall if you decide to check for voltage.

To answer your question, yes there is a fuel cuttoff or inertia switch in the trunk, but I don't believe that is your problem or the fuel filter. Find a way to test for fuel at the rail and get a spark tester. This should help you narrow down the problem area. I hope this helps.

BTW, the problem I found was a broken female pin in the crank sensor connector. You could have thrown $1,000 in parts at that problem and never solved it. This is why I'm pointing you to the basics. I hope this helps.

i own a repair shop, and the pump its self is in the gas tank on this one, if you have to replace it you have to drop the tank on it,,and they also have a pump relay ,and a safety switch that is located in the trunk area on it,,behind a panel back there, any one of these things will knock the pump out,,and a bad filter will also make it not get any fuel at all when you turn the key on ,,you should be able to hear the pump run for a few seconds, then cut off,if you don't hear this ,id check for power at the pump wires by the fuel tank,,also check the fuse for it also,,its located in the fuse panel ,and they do blow once in a while,,good luck,i hope this help,s,,have a good x-mas.

No, it does not have to be in drive, nor does it have to be moving. It is a force of impact device. No speed specs. If I need to test one at work, I simply hit the side of the switch with my hand, and voila!, it trips the switch. It's the force of an impact that trips it.

the fuel pump is in the tank, but if i were you,i would change the gas filter, and does the engine light come on?if it does, check the crank sensor, but if it didnt, you could check for spark at the plugs.if you dont have spark, check the coil pack and module.

Yes, In for cars it's usually in the trunk. In trucks it's usually located in the passenger side floorboard. (except for diesels) I believe 96-99 body styles had them located in the passenger side of the trunk. Check your owners manual. If you don't have one go here on-line.
