It's not history as such that repeats itself but human nature. Human beings are patterns of behavior...and when patterns are reinforced they are repeated. The character of those patterns is predetermined by the way in which we see ourselves. So, every generation needs to discover those patterns for themselves, and either change the way in which they see or repeat the status quo and eventually regress. Mankind tends to opt for the second choice and thus civilizations rise and fall. You would think we would catch on after a while--but the spirit of self-examination is weak.

It does. Maybe not the same events, but the same mistakes keep happening over and over, maybe not exactly in the same form, but there are similar cycles that occurr (they can be seen in history textbooks) If you're really interested and want to research it in a small scale, just take a quick look at music history...

For example Tin Pan Alley in the early 1900's = Manufactured music. Then the blues, then the whites borrowing from the blues which eventually led to rock and roll in the 50's.

In the late 80's/ early 90's we were bombarded with crappy manufactured pop bands (ie. New Kids on the Block) and then eventhough it was in a shorter period of time, we had another new form of unique music emerge in the form of bands such as Pearl Jam and Nirvana (grunge) And all that is just to make a long story short. There's a little more to it than that, but that's just simplifying things beyond simple.

Anyway, it's kind of neat.

Yes and it has many times. Of course it is repeated by civilizations which made the same mistakes that other peoples have made down through the years. For example, take this country. We fought a war in Viet Nam and got bogged down and ultimately lost the war. It happened again when we got in Korea and settled on a division of the country. Now here we are again this time in Iraq. What do you think will be the outcome? Sound familiar?

I don't think they mean that actual events in history are repeated. I think that what is meant is that, until we become wiser and learn from our history, we make the same mistakes over and over. Also that, as a species, we are driven by our biology to make many of the same choices generation after generation.

Of course. Humans are extremely predictable and often repeat their mistakes. There are plenty of patterns in human nature that'll keep repeating themselves until the end of time.

Yes,
The USA felt itself 'untouchable' and 'safe from ANY outside country'. We proudly flew our flag across the world and dared anyone to challenge us as we made foreign policy. We shipped supplies to other nations that were at war, and thought ourselves immune. We believed our military to be at a proper state of readiness and we slept good at night.

Until the attack from the skies began, and you could see the flames and smoke rising into the clouds.

We stared in awe, and listened silently as our President made the announcement on the news that day.

That Day you ask?

In the 60's America sent troops into Vietnam based on faulty intelligence (the Tonkin Gulf incident) and became mired in a highly unpopular war resulting in the death of thousands of American troops faced with an extremely motivated enemy.
Need I go on?
