I tend to sleep too long if allowed the change and whenever I have to wake up early I have to make up for it later in the day with a nap. How can I reduce the number of hours I sleep and still feel well?

I had this same problem.
The naps are killing you.
I promise if you quit taking naps you won't be as tired.
It might take a couple days to get used to it, but try it!

Excerpts from a recent study:

For years we have been led to believe that, to maintain a healthy mind and body, we needed adequate sleep and adequate sleep meant eight hours every night. A new study, just published in the appears to refute that statement.

The six-year long study that involved more than a million men and women suggested that people who slept seven hours a night had the best mortality rate while those who slept eight hours or more or six hours or less had significantly lower mortality rates. In other words, those who slept more than six hours and less than eight lived longer.

Daniel F. Ripke, M.D. professor of psychology at the University of California and head of the research group stated that eight hours of sleep were not really necessary. "It is evidently very safe to sleep only seven, six or even five hours a night."

Eat a well balanced diet and get some exercise. Sounds simpl and it is. Healthy people need less sleep to cope with lifes little stresses.
