People in the South are more friendly on the surface than in the NE, but it is a "kuss die hand" kind of friendliness, they can be polite, oh so polite, to your face but talk nasty about you behind your back. The friendliness disappears if you do not conform, you know their church, their morals. The NE is much more liberal.

I grew up in the northeast and I will always feel at home there. I love the changing seasons, the foliage in fall and snow in winter. The northeast is also a region of short distances. From CT, for example, you can go to NYC, Boston, Rhode Island beaches, hunting in Maine, and so many other places within a short drive.
However, the northeast along the Boston - DC corridor tends to be fast-paced and people can be impatient. They are terrible and rude drivers.
The Southwest, where I have spent a significant amount of time, has a slower pace of life. People are friendlier, even in the cities. It's a nice, people-based atmosphere.
I can't really comment on economic/financial aspects of the regions, although I do know that housing in many places in the northeast is fairly expensive.

Whatever you do do NOT move to Colorado. It's got some of the rudest, snobbiest, vindictive, evil people I have met in my entire life. I have met about twenty people here that I actually like. The older people are extremely conservative and many of the young people are wannabe thugs. The Northeast is beautiful with changing seasons. People are not as friendly as the south but they are more in your face honest. The Northeast has abundant amounts of water as well.

I have lived in all four corners, as well as the middle, and I have found that while Tennessee and Georgia are both considered the south, they are completely different, can't be compared, and are not individually representative of what its like to live in the south. Same thing goes for Arizona vs. Colorado, or Michigan vs. Vermont.
