How do you get through them? Don't you feel like dying of embarassment?

Do you shave down there before going? I'm 23 and have never seen a gyn before.

You need to go to a gyn especially if you are sexually active- this is for your health and well-being! Trust me the Dr doesn't care if you're shaved, hairy or whatever, they see vagina's every day in all shapes, sizes, colors and even some that smell I'm sure!

Tell your Dr it's your first exam and go to a woman it's a little less uncomfortable.

Shaving your pubic region does NOT make the exam more sterile. That's why laboring women aren't routinely shaved anymore. In fact, there was worse infection when shaved.

Only shave if you usually do. Otherwise just be clean. Give yourself a trim if you want.

I just think of it like any doctor's exam, it's businesslike. When the examination is going on don't stare deeply in the doctor's eyes, that's sort of frowned on (ha ha... a little levity). Relax as best you can. If you know how to yogic breathe, breathe into your pubic region, it will relax your muscles and make the exam more comfortable. And if you don't feel comfortable with your doctor, find another. Life is far too short and there are too many really good doctors to put up with one that makes you uncomfortable.

I make sure I shower before I go, that way I'm good and clean. And no, I don't feel like dying of embarassment...my obgyn is a professional, and should conduct his or herself in a like manner. If they don't, then you should make a complaint to the same. Both times I have gone, there has been a female present to assist the doctor. Don't worry...just take a deep breath and try to relax. Think about other things. The exam takes no time at all.

I used to feel embarassed but now I couldn't care a less.
Just remember that it is their job. The see those things all the time, every day, its just work for them.

I used to do care work and I know the patients were embarassed when I was doing personal care, but I would take their minds off of it by making small talk and changing the focus of the situation. The patients seemed to appreciate that.

The gyn might try to make small talk too or there might be a nurse in the room who will.

The main thing is to relax and remember that this is their job and they do it all the time.

Hope this helps.

You should of started seeing a gyno when you were first sexually active or had your first period but I can understand delaying.

It's not a fun thing to do but find a doctor who you can feel comfortable talking to and let them know you've never had a gyno exam...they should be understanding. If it's easier on you feel free to have a woman doctor but a man gyno isn't less of a gyno just cause he's a guy.

Just try to relax, cause tense muscles will only make it uncomfortable physically. Keep your mind occupied..I suggest just chatting with your doctor while being examined to keep your mind off it.

A good doctor should explain what they're doing as they're doing it. If after you go to your first gyno exam and you didn't like the doctor, don't be discouraged find another doctor for your second exam. Remember it's your body so fid someone you're comfortable with and take care of yourself.

I've been going for 20 years, and it's not on my list of favorite things to do, but it does get easier. No, there's no need to shave first. I can't stand the itch as it grows back anyway!!

I just try to keep talking the whole time, about nothing, anything, everything, just to keep my mind off! My gyno is probably happy to get out of the room! LOL!!

I think the breast exam is worse, probably because his face is so close to mine, it seems more like foreplay I guess! LOL! The pelvic exam is somewhat uncomfortable, so it seems very medical in comparison.

You'll get through it. They are used to people being nervous about it.

Honestly it's not as bad as it seems. Something happens when you get there and you realize "wow, she does this all day and doesn't care at all". My first one was odd, sure, but just go in there being as mature as you can and it won't seem so wierd.
No, don't bother shaving, they see everything and they don't care. My first time the woman even told me "Some people feel the need to shave down there but it really doesn't make any difference to us".
So there ya go, stright from the OB's mouth.

If you are 23 you definitely need to go. The first time was pretty nerve racking, but they are a doctor and they are there to make sure you are healthy. It will be very professional and they will understand if you are nervous. Every woman goes and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. After I had my son I lost all modesty around doctors and nurses. Make an appt. asap, just make sure you are clean and well groomed and you will feel less anxious.

If you don't feel comfortable with the idea of having a male doctor, you could always ask to have a female doctor. It's not a big deal, really. I was nervous about the idea too, but it's best for your health to be checked. Just think of it as necessary or important. They see plenty of vaginas! Nothing to worry about ;)!

Just relax... Thats the best advice anyone can give. Remember, they've seen a million of them and they are just wanting to make sure you are ok. Take a deep breath and go for it. Everything will be fine.
