I just interviewed for a detention center that's ran by the county government. I was wondering if I should send a post-interview thank you letter or a letter of some sorts. Is this appropriate or would it be considered schmoozing? I'm just trying to gauge what most people do after an interview and help my chances. Thank you for serious answers. I flag stupid answers.

For a government job, no. Most of the time, the people doing the hiring don't actually make the decisions; they have a long checklist of job requirements and each applicant gets a score based on the checklist. The one with the highest score gets the job. In the private sector, a follow-up letter is appropriate and even recommended but in government, it's not expected or customary, and it won't influence the decision.

Yes, definately!!! I just learned about this in a technical communication course I am taking in college.

This can make a great impression because few of the other applicants will take the time to write a letter. Write a letter thanking them for taking the time to see you and emphasize your particular qualifications. Restate your interest in the position.

If you don't get the postition, you should write another letter. You might get a call saying that the person they chose had to change their plans, and they might give you the position! Here is an example:

Dear Mr. Weaver:

I was disappointed to learn that I wil not have a chance to join your staff, because I feel that I could have made a substantial contribution. However, I realize that job decisions are complex, involving many candidates and many factors.

Thank you very much for the courtesy you have shown me.

Sincerely,......

A "thank you for your time" letter is certainly OK. Just make it short and sweet. The annoying thing is phone calls. Don't make too many of those. I got my great job after 3 interviews over a 3 month period. It was frustrating but worth it. I have a salary and access to the company car. I sent a short thank you letter after the 1st interview.
