Keeping it simple,
CD-R disks can never be used again for anything else after data has been burnt on it. CD-RW disks are rewriteable, meaning whatever data you place on that disk can later be erased or the disk reformatted so that it may be used again for something else.
There are differences in the price. CD-RW disks cost more than CD-R disks.

A CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) is a variation of the Compact Disc invented by Philips and Sony. CD-R is a write once, read-only optical magnetic media commonly known as optical disc (though the whole disk does not have to be written in the same session) and retains a high level of compatibility with standard CD readers (unlike CD-RW which can be rewritten but has much lower compatibility and the discs are considerably more expensive).
Compact Disc ReWritable (CD-RW) is a rewritable optical disc format. Known as CD-Erasable (CD-E) during its development, CD-RW was introduced in 1997, and was preceded by the failed CD-MO in the 1988.

CD-R's can be made into mp3 disc or exact duplicates of regular cd's.
CD-RW's can be written too over and over again like a floppy drive or a harddrive.

R=READ
W=WRITE
IF YOUR LAPTOP SAYS R ONLY, IT ONLY READS, IF IT SAYS RW IT MEANS THAT IT READS AND WRITES. YOU CAN PUT A CD IN AND IT WILL READ WHATS ON IT. AND THE W MEANS THAT YOU CAN BURN CD S. LIKE MUSIC AND FILES.
GOD BLESS
