For performance, the brand does not matter as much as it depends on what the computer has in it. Compare the individual models, not the brands as a whole.
For the absolute best performance, you would be better off buying the best (you can afford) parts available and then build it yourself or getting someone to build it for you. If you can do it yourself and look around at the right places you might save some money too.
Out of the overall quality of the brands mentioned, I would probably say Dell, of course I haven't used a Gateway or Sony much though. I would suggest avoiding Compaq. They are now HPs lower end models and they are difficult to upgrade.

The overall best maker is HP. They have a solid reputation backed up by decades of proven quality.
Dell is popular, but you have to cross your fingers and hope that nothing goes wrong with it b/c their customer (dis)service has been sent to India. Assuming that you can find someone who speaks English well enough to understand your problem, they will tell you over and over to "run diagnostics". (Taken from experience.)
When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them, and everything is Vista ready.
Microsoft is about to release its latest operating system, Vista, in January. It’s going to make all of these “bargain” computers nothing but JUNK as soon as it’s released. The reason that you are seeing so many cheap systems on the market right now is because a lot of them CAN’T RUN Vista and the merchants are trying to dump them as hard and fast as they can before Vista shows up and everyone learns what a piece of crap they were sold for $500 (or whatever).
Anyway, I bought a complete, new system from stupidcheapcomputers.net with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.
I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.
Good luck!

I'd say HP or one company you didn't list, Alienware. HP's are way cheaper...but Alienware's are some of the best you can buy...but you will spend over $5000 for their best....don't buy a dell if you don't want to buy a replacement in the fututre....they make their own motherboards and so you might not be able to replace it....Sony...i don't know much of their computers but they say they are good....but i don't know....Compaqs are not well made.....Gateways are alright but there are way better computers out there....Voodoo is owned by HP they are more gaming oriented but expensive like Alienware.....

There is no way to determine this by the information you've provided. You can't compare computer performance by just listing vendors. The former answer regarding Compaq is idiotic. You need to compare specific models from each vendor. Like IBM Thinkpad 2623DAU vs. Dell latitidue d620.
