Planned Parenthood

I'm pretty sure that even at Planned Parentood and other free/low-cost clinics they'll only supply you with one or two months worth of pills before you have to have an annual exam. If you don't know, an "annual" (or bi-annual now as younger women with no abnormal PAP results are recommended to get one every two years now) is an annoying examination in which you get swabbed from the inside, the swab is tested (the PAP Smear test), and they determine if you have any medical conditions that need treatment, or would lead to complications with birth control.
They need to make sure the pills are safe for you, and it's a way of keeping tabs on your sexual health. Annoying though they are, you need them. Really, it's not all that bad when you consider the alternative of not having the pills!

I think there is a way to get them through Planned Parenthood? Not sure, but, if you've never gotten an exam an you're over 16, it's a good idea to go to the GYN.

You should also get your blood tested before taking pills, actually--so there is more than one reason to go to a doctor before getting BC!

For example, if you have a hereditary blood thickness problem, BC can make that worse and cause lots of bad side effects--some people are actually not allowed to take most types of BC because of this problem.

Aaaand, if you have gall stones, the estrogen in BC can make those worse as well.... so you might end up having to see a doctor anyway, if you don't see one first.

Planned Parenthood requires an internal exam. I don't think you can get a prescription without them, unless maybe you're really young (an obvious virgin) and they're being prescribed for period regulation. Even then, I'm not sure.

There are just too many possible side effects. You have to be followed by a doctor.

The health dept. but they will still exam you. You can't get out of it. Just suck it up and find one you feel comfortable with because you'll be seeing them for the next 40 or so years.....If you don't feel good about the first one you pick, go to a different one next time, but sometimes "word of mouth" is the best....ask.
