As a former teacher, I have to agree with the gift card idea to a local or big chain bookstore, especially if you're talking about an English, history, or language teacher.

Also, notice if your teacher buys anything for your classroom out of his or her own pocket. For example, is your teacher the only one who had tissues, pens, folders, etc., available? If so, that could be coming out of his or her own paycheck rather than out of the school supply closet. A gift certificate to Staple, Office Max, or another supply store - or something to the local grocery store or coffee shop - would be much appreciated.

Another gift I appreciated (and still use!) was a travel mug.

Yet another idea would be to donate a book to your school's library in your teacher's name, especially if she or he has mentioned a great reference or other type of book that your school doesn't have.

But, honestly, the best gift would be a nice note thanking the teacher and mentioning anything special that teacher has done for you. Of the things I received from students, these are what I truly treasure, and I still pull them out every once in a while when I need encouragement and cheering up. Teachers give so much of themselves and are so rarely given any signs of appreciation from students, parents, even the administration, so this would truly be the most welcome present of all.

I agree with the giftcard or gift certificate bit----because the average teacher has enough coffee mugs to set up a Starbucks outlet, and enough office supplies for a small store.

IMHO, Amazon rocks----they have SO much diversity there, especially since it's no longer _just_ books and music.

You could always go to the local craft store, ie: Hobby Lobby, there are always nice ornaments and such or you could always buy the decorate it yourself ornament and give it to the teacher. My kids do this...they buy a clear ornament, either glass or plastic, and stuff it full of confetti (you can make it yourself) and nestle their picture in the confetti...and on the ball they write the year either in paint or colored marker. I have always gotten rave reviews over these. Good Luck, I hope I helped a bit.

Teachers love these things because they are so cute, strong and can be used everywhere. Trust me I have a lot of teacher friends. Get he/she a couple packs of these.
