well, for one they are not mutually exclusive. there is high tech manufacturing of hardware components like disk drives, etc. but the IT industry also includes software, services, etc. The uses are many and varied as there are many types of businesses in this space. As to disadvantages, I am not aware of any in the context of comparison between the two industries.
