Originally an arty outgrowth of hardcore punk, emo became an important force in underground rock by the late '90s, appealing to modern-day punks and indie-rockers alike. Some emo leans toward the progressive side, full of complex guitar work, unorthodox song structures, arty noise, and extreme dynamic shifts; some emo is much closer to punk-pop, though it's a bit more intricate. Emo lyrics are deeply personal, usually either free-associative poetry or intimate confessionals. Though it's far less macho, emo is a direct descendant of hardcore's preoccupations with authenticity and anti-commercialism; it grew out of the conviction that commercially oriented music was too artificial and calculated to express any genuine emotion.

My daughter told me its some kind of style that kids her age are "into". It kind of goes with the black dyed hair, and long bangs in your face, and those jeans/pants that are tight all the way down to the ankles, black clothes, and black sneakers. You've seen it at school. Thick eyeliner (even the boys). Hard core music and loud. Now you know.

No, it's not just goth anymore.
These kids are black-wearing, eyeliner-sporting, All American Rejects- listening punks.

emo does mean emotional but people confuse it with gothic but the difference is:
Gothic- "I hate the world"
Emo- "The world hates me"

Emotional. You don't necessarily have to be cutting your wrists, have horn-rimmed glasses, or any of the other stereotypical stuff.

It is kindof goth....... but alot worse like you cut yourself "life sucks" tattoos piercings everywhere. And you wear all black.
