every practitioner has their own theory some will do exams at the end to strip your membranes to release prostiglandins in hopes of softening your cervix and lead to delivery earlier though evidence based practice has not shown this to be true, some don't exam you at the end because why are you vag curious you will actively dilate with uterine contractions why push mother nature? They do a routine pelvic and pap at the 1st trimester of pregnancy to check for STD and other lesions or disorders of the cervix like HPV that would require additional care. also at this time they measure the pelvic spines to help determine if you have an adequate pelvic diameter etc.

Everytime I go to the doctor she does an internal exam. She feels my uterus and makes sure it is growing...then usually because of my spotting I have a vaginal sono done. They know what they are doing...so just relax. They wouldn't do it if it was harmful to the baby.
Oh...at 4 or 5 weeks I had a pap done....and that was okay too. I just had a little red spotting after it was over.

, Towards the end they usually do that every week, to see how far you are progressing. They do it at the very first prenatal exam you go to, and then always at the end.
