I breastfed my daughter and it hurt like hell for the first month. It got so bad that my nipples were bleeding. My docter sent a Le Leche League volunteer to talk to me. She told me that my daughter wasn't latching on correctly. I used a lot of lanolin salve and things got better.

Check out the Le Leche League site for help and don't give up!!!
Good luck!

Yes.

I breast fed my son for eight months until my supply slowed and changed due to...another pregnancy.

I would advise you to time your breasts. I did fifteen minutes each side. If she's not that big of an eather you can do 10 minutes on each side. Also, Lansinoh is a life saver! It actually stops the friction process.

However, sometimes the Lansinoh works too well. I used it all the time and didn't allow myself to get used to the sucking. So, I eventually had to give it up. But, some people can use it the whole time with no problem. Make sure you get 100% Lansinoh. Target has it in their baby isle if you want to make hubby run out for it :)))

Also, for immediate comfort you can get the Lansinoh super soft nursing pads. And, dallop a little of the Lansinoh right on the pad. It's heavenly!

If you need something immediate get into your vegetable crisper and pull out some cabbage. The cool leafs fit nicely into your bra and are cooling and soothing.

Email me if you need anything else!!

And, Congrats! You'll make it through in no time...it gets easier and better as you both get used to breast feeding. I promise!

I breast fed the last 3 of my five children. Breast feeding will cause your nipples to be sore. This will get better with time and practice. It might even get worse before it gets better. If it's your whole breast it could be because your milk is coming in which should have happened around the 9th. It can make you breast feel really full and sore. Just remember to nurse every couple of hours and that baby is latched properly. If you run a fever or have to much pain in your breast call you dr. sometimes nursing mothers can set up a breast infection called mastitis. Good luck and congrats.

Firstly Congratulations on being a mother and continue to breast feed try not to let this put you off.... I would make sure you contact your Midwife and get her to check with you that you're doing it correctly, as it's not a thing you can master straight away it's not just you it the training of you and the baby to get it right, once done correctly you'll not regret doing it....

Sounds to me that she's not latching on properly, pull her off and get her to re attach making sure the whole nipple is in, and in the middle of the mouth.... It's hard to tell you exactly but you'll notice the difference as it'll feel more comfortable.... I breast fed both my children who are now 7 and 5.... The first time was uncomfortable and sore but in time you and the baby will get used to how to do this.... Speak to your midwife and get her to check with you that you're doing it correctly, honestly worth doing... You can also get some nipple cream from the pharmacy to help, but after a while you'll not need it.... Make sure you swap breasts also to help with the soreness....

What can I do if my nipples get sore?
It's easier to prevent sore nipples than it is to treat them. The main thing that causes sore nipples is when your baby doesn't latch on properly.

If your baby isn't latched on the right way, you'll need to start over. To take your baby off your breast, release the suction by putting your finger in the corner of your baby's mouth between the gums.

Don't limit the time you let your baby nurse. Putting a limit on nursing time doesn't prevent sore nipples, but it may keep the milk ducts from completely emptying. This can lead to swelling and pain. Applying crushed ice compresses before nursing can ease discomfort.

Some women find that rubbing lanolin on their nipples is soothing. If you use lanolin, wash it off before feeding your baby.

Call your doctor if you have a red, sore or painful area on your breast, if you have painful engorgement (overfull breasts), if you have a fever or if you feel achy. These may be signs of an infection.

I hope it helps, please continue it's good for you and the baby.... A little bit of advice stop as soon as it gets to about 6-8 months any longer when teeth come along gets sore.... However all babies are different, my son breast fed until he was 15 months old wouldn't go to a bottle nor formula where as my daughter fed until 6-8 months and went onto milk without a problem... As long as you can handle it, better to try past the first 6 months if possible 4 months if you require to stop earlier.... They get the best start in life on the breast and it help you in loosing the weight afterwards also... Well worth doing....

Take care and good luck....

It could be your baby is not latching on correctly, call and ask to see a lactation consultant just to be sure. In the meantime use lots of lanolin cream to help keep them from drying out and cracking too bad. It took me a few months to toughen up, some people are more sensitive then others.

Make sure the baby is latched on properly. I had pain while nursing my son, and as soon as I positioned him correctly, nursing was much less painful. Also, make sure your breasts aren't too full (also referred to as engorgement). If they are, try pumping them to relieve some of the pressure. If you need help positioning your baby, ask your OB for the name of a lactation consultant or talk to someone at your local WIC office. Congratulations on your new baby.

If it really hurts you aren't doing it right and you need to get help from either La Leche League (free) or a lactation consultant

My nipples were sore and bled for a month after I had my son. I found that Avent breast shields were the best thing ever invented for breastfeeding mothers.(they are a soft silicone nipple that you place over yours to protect you)

I know this may sound weird but try using cold cabbage leaves to relieve the soreness. Has to be cabbage not lettuce. Good luck!

Try switching between breasts more often and invest in nipple cream; that will help the cracking and dryness.
