I've heard its for the financial security of the family. But I've never been married so I really wouldn't know for sure, though this does make sense.

Separation pay. Then again, these days, marriage is mostly about money and children. And women like me see no sense in getting married. It's lost it's perks...you know...the GOOD ones.
