you can post for free on www.craigslist.org
Also consider doing a volunteer gig like Habitat for Humanity to network with other people and help get the word out. Or, volunteer somewhere else and send out a press release. A lot of newspapers have "good deeds" type listings for businesses so you could get a little blurb in the paper if you do something noteworthy. That would be free advertising.

Yellow Book is not the book published by the phone company. I would STRONGLY suggest getting in touch with your local phone company yelloow Pages. The Yellow Book came about a few years ago and try to pull wool over your eyes and sell on price, not value (what you get for what you pay for). I know the price is more for the REAL directory, but the real directory distributes about two to three times as more directories. The coverage area where the books are delivered is much more geographically bigger in scope. I believe this book has to buy its listings to print from a 3rd party company that uses the last year phone book from the reall yellow pages. Since the REAL yellow Pages knows when a new residential number is turned on for a new resident, they send a REAL Yellow Pages within less then a week to the new resident or business that moved in. This is the ONLY Yellow Pages that will be in the new movers hands for a long time. If they are looking for remodeling in the house- this is the book they will use.
There are 2 tyoes of advertising. One is creative advertising (branding your company-radio,newspaper,etc) and the other is driective advertising (Yellow Pages). You need to use some creative advertising to get people to remember you, but when the newspaper has been thrown away, the radio ad is just a memory- the consumer will go to a traditional Yellow Pages for the number to call. This is the moment where the consumer chooses a number to call. Usually after talking to one competitor, that consumer has been snatched. So place a huge emphasis here. Also if you want to advertise online, I suggest looking at yellowpages.com and clicking on the link that says advertise with us.
Also check out www.bni.com and your local chamber of Commerce for networking opportunities. Really take your time and figure out what network group you want to invest yourself with.
est wishes and good luck!

Several reasonable ways to advertise. The best way is word of mouth from your previous customer. If you are just starting out you are building a customer base. Locate all the home building or remodeling contractors you would like to work for. Introduce yourself, give them a business card, also a portfolio of work you have finished if you have one. If you do not have a portfolio of jobs you have done build one so when a customer asks, "How do I know your work is good?" you can show them. Pictures say it all when people want to see what you can do. Give references of people you have done drywall work for. Contractor businesses build on reputation so try to keep your reputation clean.

Salesmanship. As it is you probably get some work. When you are doing a job ask for referrals. Working from your current client base you can build your business. If you don't do good enough work for your clients to recommend their friends, you shouldn't be doing the work. The key is to get the names and numbers of a couple of them, and leave business cards with your clients to give to friends for others. Everybody at least knows five friends who may or may not need work done. What you tell them is that they don't tell their Friends that they need it until it's done, by then it's too late. Once you have names and numbers call them, tell them you just did work for "the Smiths" they really liked the job you did, and ask them if they need any done. All it takes is the balls to ask and be turned down. If they say they don't have anything right now, ask for their address and send them a "discount card" for future work because they are a friend of your "valued customer" Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

You might look into signing up for servicemagic.com.
You might also try putting an ad on Craigslist.
You should ask your customers to refer you to others. You might also try contacting some real estate agents and/or painters. I imaging they would encounter situations where they have customers with smaller jobs that they need done quickly.
