that Spielberg be loyal to the "content" of the script which would give us more of an imitation/recreation of a Kubrick film in content

or that Speilberg take the same stance as Stanley Kubrick would have which was to bring forth an uncompromising personal vision - which would make it more a Spielberg film then a Kubrick film.

So "content" or the "spirit" in which Kubrick created films?

He didn't get just Kubrick's script, but also all his notes and suggestions. He vowed to stay 'as loyal as possible' to Kubrick's vision. So we have to assume he did that. It's all the other 'little details' from Set Design to Music to the type of film used that would make it different than what Kubrick's version would have been. We'll never know. I think it was a good jesture, Spielberg made by finishing this film for Kubrick, but the story deserves a full-on Director/Producer/Writer who can do just one vision and not one's interpretation of another's vision. The version we got was filmed beautifully, but the story suffered from the 'dreary pacing of the editing', imho. But, hey, it was just a Sci-fi version of Pinnochio afterall ;-)

I believe that Spielberg like any creative artist takes the original premise and fashions his own original answer. Therefore, I would agree with the "personal vision" cited above.
