Do you mean study Shakespeare as actors, or as literature students?
His plays are the highest expression of dramatic art in the English language. Beautiful poetry, universal themes, vibrant characters...they're great, even if you're just reading them for pleasure.
As acting texts, they're essential for the development of any would-be performer. Simply put, they require MORE of an actor than any other texts. Shakespeare taxes an actor's physical, vocal, and imaginative skills like no other writer. If an actor can master the fundamental performance skills required to play these texts effectively, he/she will find that any other writer is well within his/her scope.

Because the issues addressed really are still applicable to our society today. Betrayal, love, jeaolousy, corrupt government, etc. Also, because Shakespeare is regarded highly, it makes you more well-rounded in social situations. We have lots and lots of linguistic references that come from Shakespeare, so it's just good to know. People will think you are smart. lol

Because Shakespeare is great. Period. Consider reading Harold Bloom's book on his work.

truth is its a waste of time pure and simple . the reason you study shakespeare is so that one day at some snob party if some other snob comments on shakespeare you will be able to respond with a equally snobby quote from his books.
there are plenty of other writtters of modern day that teach the same leason in there books but do so with out the freaking snob
nonsence.

I can think of absolutely no reason why one shouldn't read his work. The plots and themes are still relevant to today's society and one should at least be familiar with his work to be considered culturally literate.

my $.02. To consider the thoughts and feeling of people that lived long ago in a different culture, you can learn a lot about what parts of human nature never change, and what parts of human nature might be cultural.
